Penalties for hitting animals on the road
Unfortunately, one of the causes of road accidents, which is not very rare, is a collision with wild animals on the road. According to statistics, there are about 600 collisions of vehicles with forest dwellers in Latvia every year.
However, official statistics show only some part of the reality. Drivers usually call the police only if their vehicle is seriously damaged and they want to use their insurance policy. But in cases where a small animal falls under the wheels without causing any damage to the vehicle, the drivers often do not call the police at all. Moreover, some of them even take the downed animal with them so that the meat does not go to waste.
It is important to note that if you leave the place of the accident with a wild animal, this is considered to be an escape (leaving the scene of the accident) and entails punishment. In Latvia, the fine for a downed animal ranges from 70 to 700 euros. If the driver also puts the downed animal into the car, then this is equivalent to poaching, and in this case an additional fine from 30 to 700 euros will be charged.
How to avoid collisions with wild animals?
First, pay attention to road signs that warn drivers about animals in the area. When approaching a dangerous area, choose a safe driving speed, so that you can:
* notice the animal on time;
* stop on time;
* reduce the impact in case of collision.
In the dark, if there are no oncoming cars, turn on the high beam. This way you have a better chance of spotting the animal from afar.
What to do if a collision cannot be avoided?
* Slow down immediately!
* Do not turn the steering wheel: it will only expose you, passengers traveling with you, and vehicles driving in the opposite lane to additional danger.
What to do after a collision with an animal?
* Stop and remain at the place of the accident;
* Turn on the hazard light and display the hazard sign;
* If, as a result of the collision, there are injured people or the car was damaged, notify the police (in Latvia the police phone number is 110) and, if necessary, the ambulance (in Latvia call 112).
* If neither people nor the car were injured in the road accident, then there is no need to inform the police, but it is necessary to inform the service responsible for the forest areas (for Latvia the phone number is 67212776).
Don’t forget:
Don't get close to the downed animal! The animal can be aggressive, and can also be a carrier of various dangerous diseases.
The downed animal cannot be taken away from the place of the accident on your own! This is an illegal act for which a fine is imposed.
We wish you a safe driving experience!
